Winter Cold Fronts (Berry Islands)
25° 36.0′ N · 77° 45.0′ W · approximate
From December to March, cold fronts sweep through every week or so, clocking the wind from SE through S and W to NW and N at 20-30 kt; most Berry Islands anchorages face west onto the bank, so fronts decide where you can sleep.
Practical
Position: centre of the chain (representative). Front-day shelter from ActiveCaptain reports: Great Harbour Cay Marina or Bay of Five Pirates; Bullocks Harbour North and Cistern Cay South in N-W winds; White Cay (moderate W-N shelter, not in heavy seas); Frazers Hog North, Bird Cay Beach and Whale Cay in N-NW; Cockroach Cay when the wind goes past east. Leave Little Harbour Cay, Hoffman's and the Great Harbour beach anchorages before a westerly. Watch NOAA and Bahamas forecasts daily.
