Cooper's Town Anchorage

26° 52.3′ N · 77° 30.5′ W

Open-water anchorage off the Cooper's Town waterfront, a good place to stop when westerly winds make the cays across the way uncomfortable.

Practical

ActiveCaptain position. Proceed straight in as close as depth allows; about 12 ft close to shore with good holding and a clean chain (2018). Protected in westerly winds only; wakes from passing motor yachts until dark. The rocky shore makes dinghy landing awkward: go down the coast to a less rocky area or use a fuel dock. A strong-westerly bolt-hole from Powell Cay, about 2 miles across (2017). The bottom near the newer shipping terminal at Conch Rock Creek to the north was hard with no holding (2017). Pre-Dorian reports. Update (2023 ActiveCaptain): a crew anchored in 14 ft then moved out to 16 ft to clear the seawall; great holding but a miserable swell at high tide with 9-knot east-south-east winds. The commercial pier had no usable ladders and the wooden pier was destroyed, so they landed at an old boat ramp, set a stern anchor on the dinghy and waded ashore; they had lunch at M&M's. Treat shore access as difficult.
