Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary
13° 1.6′ N · 61° 12.8′ W · approximate
A seaside hatchery at Park Beach where former skin-diving fisherman Orton 'Brother' King raises endangered hawksbill turtles in sea-water ponds until they are big enough to survive release.
Practical
Position from the OpenStreetMap node (approx). Brother King collects hatchlings, feeds them for about three years until they are about 14 inches long, then releases them (sanctuary website). About 15 minutes by car or an hour's walk from Admiralty Bay over the hill and down the windward coast (Noonsite report, 2002). Entry has been by donation/fee (EC$10 in 2002 - verify locally); the visit is much better when Brother King is there to explain. Combine with the Spring and Industry Bay walk and lunch at Sugar Reef.
