Fort Hill (Point Lookout Fort, Clifton)
12° 36.1′ N · 61° 24.9′ W · approximate
A 400 ft hill above Union's airstrip that once carried a 17th-century cannon battery guarding the approaches to Clifton. Today the fort's ruins make the best lookout over Clifton Harbour's reef, Palm Island and the Tobago Cays.
Practical
Coordinate is derived: the hilltop fort ruin and viewpoint that OpenStreetMap labels 'Point Lookout Fort' (node 2356449055, tagged historic ruins and viewpoint). This matches Discover SVG's description of Fort Hill as a 400 ft peak overlooking the airport and 'once the location of a 17th century canon battery', but the identification is not confirmed by a second source. Wikivoyage also lists other old fort names on Union (Fort Murray, Fort Irene, Fort Rapid) without locations. From the Clifton dinghy docks walk past the airport and up the hill road: carry water and sun protection, as there is little shade. Stay well clear of the runway and the airport approach. Basic maps are available from the Union Island Tourism Association office outside the ferry wharf.
