Clifton Town and Waterfront (Union Island)

Union's busy little capital wraps around the head of Clifton Harbour: one front street of colourful shops, bars, provisioners and the open-air market facing Hugh Mulzac Square and the ferry wharf. It is the southern Grenadines' clearance port and the place every cruiser comes ashore to restock.

Position is the Clifton town node in OpenStreetMap; Wikipedia gives 12.59583, -61.41861. Land at the Bougainvilla or Anchorage Yacht Club dinghy docks. Discover SVG: the main street has bars, coffee shops, boutiques, eateries, supermarkets, yacht provisioners and internet cafés; the open-air fruit and vegetable market is opposite Hugh Mulzac Square and the wharf; taxis wait near the market; the Union Island Tourism Association office is outside the ferry wharf. Hugh Mulzac Square honours the Union Island-born seaman (born March 26, 1886) who in 1942 became captain of the Liberty ship SS Booker T. Washington, insisting on an integrated crew. Two stone memorials stand in the square: one to the enslaved Africans who died on Union, especially the 53 who died between September 1777 and July 1778 as cotton production rose 120 percent; and 'In Memory and in Strength', for Hurricane Beryl. OpenStreetMap maps customs and immigration (Monday to Friday 8 am to noon and 12:45 pm to 3 pm as tagged; verify locally), the Tobago Cays Marine Park office, the Bank of SVG with ATM, Grandma & Pa Supermarket and the Clifton Vegetable Market here. Post-Beryl (Doyle 2025): many residents still in temporary shelters, the large grocery store fully operational, a handful of market stalls on the main road, and several restaurants closed. Petty theft occurs; lock the dinghy.
