Bequia Sail Lofts and Canvas Shops
13° 0.6′ N · 61° 14.1′ W · approximate
Bequia's sailmakers still work the old way, at floor-level machines in small wooden lofts near the harbour, and turn round sail, sunshade and canvas repairs in a day or two.
Practical
Position is Alick's Sails and Bequia Traditional Sailing Academy on OpenStreetMap (node 10773107202), approx; the other lofts are a short walk away in Port Elizabeth and Belmont. Listed in the Antilles Guide directory (older, verify which still trade): Alick Sail Repairs (sail repairs, cushions, awnings; VHF 68), Bequia Canvas (sail repairs, awnings; VHF 68; on the north side of Admiralty Bay per a cruiser forum), and Grenadines Sails & Canvas (sail manufacture and repair, North Sails agent). Sailmaker Avell Davis, making and mending sails since 1984, works from a loft near the pier and quoted US$300 and a day's work to restitch a genoa sunshade (2022 cruiser account; verify locally). A December 2013 forum post had a dodger panel re-done overnight at Bequia Canvas for EC$40-60 an hour and noted the sail lofts are often busy, so book early in the season (verify locally). Rigging: no dedicated rigger in Bequia was found in current directories - the nearest regional riggers are in St Lucia, Martinique and Grenada (sailboat-cruising.com directory); ask on the Bequia cruiser net (VHF 68) for local help with swaging or splicing.
