Bequia Heritage Museum (Whaling and Boat Museum)
12° 59.5′ N · 61° 13.9′ W · approximate
A two-building museum on the hill above Friendship Bay telling Bequia's story of whaling and wooden boatbuilding - whaleboats, harpoons, painted whale bones, the Ollivierre whaling family and an Amerindian annexe.
Practical
Position from the OpenStreetMap 'Bequia Heritage Museum' node (approx). A visitor in May 2025 found posted hours Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10:00 am-1:00 pm with out-of-hours tours by arrangement; book through Bequia Tourism (Bequia Beach Hotel). From the Friendship Bay anchorage, steep concrete steps beside the old Paradise Beach Bar lead up to Friendship Road, then a short walk south-west. Exhibits cover legendary whaler Athneal Ollivierre (the last of the hand-harpoon whalers), the Petit Nevis station and the double-ender boats. Athneal's own collection of guns, scrimshaw and paintings was displayed at his home in his lifetime; the museum's whaling gallery is the place to see that heritage now.
