Anse Turin Anchorage

14° 43.8′ N · 61° 10.8′ W

A broad, shallow anchoring shelf off the black-sand beach of Anse Turin, between Le Carbet and Saint-Pierre, with Gauguin's old haunt ashore. It is a calm alternative to the Saint-Pierre mooring zone in settled weather.

Practical

ActiveCaptain: good holding on a grassy-sandy shelf of 10-30 ft. The land-effect sea breeze can kick up a chop on sunny days, but it is calm on cloudy ones. Open approach, but a couple of shallow wrecks off the south end are marked with yellow and white plastic jugs (OSM shows the Amélie wreck at 14.72493, -61.18207). A 2023 reviewer found it a bit rolly with weed, and nets set by fishermen with a diver; they were asked to move at 5 am because their chain was in the way of a net. Anchor towards the north, keep clear of nets and watch for fish traps. No dock: the closest is Saint-Pierre. Pets are not allowed on the beaches (ActiveCaptain). Restaurant La Vague offered (expensive) Wi-Fi.

Best for

A free anchorage for the Saint-Pierre sights when the mooring field is full
