Vessup Bay (Red Hook Inner Harbor)
18° 19.5′ N · 64° 51.0′ W · approximate
The inner arm of Redhook Bay, packed with American Yacht Harbor, the St. John and BVI ferry docks and local moorings; it is on DPNR's designated-anchorage list but in practice most visitors anchor outside in Muller Bay.
Practical
Position approximate: at the OpenStreetMap 'Vessup Bay' label, checked to be in the water. Sources disagree: the DPNR designated-anchorage list (via Noonsite, 2018) names both Red Hook and Vessup Bay, but Noonsite's Red Hook page (last updated 2019) says the inner harbor (Vessup Bay) is off limits for anchoring; confirm with DPNR or the marina before dropping a hook here. Coast Pilot: the channel through Redhook Bay into Vessup Bay is marked by private buoys; ferries use the L-shaped pier in the northeast of the bay (9 ft reported at its face in 1972); the National Park Service pier on the south side had about 6 ft alongside in 1972. Heavy ferry traffic and wakes all day. Dinghy dock in American Yacht Harbor on the lee side of E dock. USVI anchoring rules: DPNR requires an Anchoring Permit for recreational vessels anchoring in USVI waters without a mooring permit, and charter vessels not registered in the USVI need a Cruising Permit for overnight anchoring (DPNR site, 2026). DPNR enforces a 14-day limit in any one designated anchorage in a six-month period (Noonsite, 2018); move bays to restart the count or apply for a long-term permit (up to 30 days).
