Drake's Anchorage (Mosquito Island)

18° 30.5′ N · 64° 23.3′ W · approximate

An anchorage tucked behind Colquhoun Reef off the east side of Mosquito Island: peaceful, scenic and breezy, with the trade winds blowing clean over the reef.

Practical

Coordinate approximate (east of Mosquito Island, south of the mapped Colquhoun Reef, OpenStreetMap). Good holding and good protection from most directions, but expect wind across the reef. Mosquito Island is private: no landing. Enter North Sound by the main channel first, then turn west inside the reef; do not try to cut across Colquhoun Reef. Depths not documented in sources found; sound in. Coast Pilot 5: Colquhoun Reef dries in patches and runs nearly 0.6 mile southeast from Mosquito Rock; the west part of Gorda Sound has 2 to 3 fathom shoals and coral patches under 1 fathom, so sound in carefully. The shoal channel between Mosquito Island and Anguilla Point is for dinghies only (see Mosquito Island - Anguilla Point Channel).
