Cane Garden Bay Mooring Field

18° 25.6′ N · 64° 39.6′ W · approximate

Tortola's most scenic north-shore anchorage: a crescent of white sand under green hills, lined with beach bars and restaurants, famous for sunsets and a short walk from the Callwood rum distillery.

Practical

Position approximate: the Cane Garden Bay bay node on OpenStreetMap (18.42636, -64.65940), about 250 m west of the mapped beach line (beach restaurants at about -64.657) and south-west of the town dinghy dock (OSM pier, 18.4277, -64.6577), so it sits in open water in the middle of the bay. Re-checked October 2026 against OpenStreetMap shoreline and pier data only; no chart or mooring-field survey could be accessed, so confirm the ball positions on a current chart or Navionics. Large mooring field and room to anchor (Yacht Warriors). BoatyBall lists Cane Garden Bay among its reservable BVI moorings at US$55/night, released daily at 7 am, check-in and check-out noon (2026); a Noonsite contributor found white visitor balls at US$40/night in December 2022 (verify locally). Sand bottom. Avoid it when a heavy north swell is running: the bay is open to the north and becomes dangerous in winter ground swells. Reef off the beach: use the dinghy channel and keep well clear of swimmers. Provisioning at Bobby's, walkable from the dinghy dock. Snorkel the west end of the beach.

Best for

Beach-bar evening and sunset on the north shore

Season

Dec–Apr only when no north swell is forecast; best May–Nov in settled trades
