Koh Khao Yai Anchorage (Bulan Channel)

6° 49.0′ N · 99° 41.0′ E

A sheltered channel anchorage between Koh Khao Yai and Koh Bulan, among castle-like limestone islands riddled with caves — the closest real anchorage to Pak Bara.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot (Koh Khao Yai, 6°48.993N 99°40.993E): the south entrance is the only option for deep-draft keelboats; enter mid-channel and motor slowly to a comfortable depth. Shallow-draft craft (under 2 m) can use the northern entrance after a dinghy reconnaissance. Both islands are uninhabited apart from fishermen. Explore caves and coves by dinghy or canoe around mid-tide; the islets south-west of Koh Bulan are riddled with caves. Koh Khao Yai is in Mu Ko Phetra National Park, whose bay Ao Kam Poo has a waterfall and turtle nesting (Wikipedia).
