Desroches Tortoise Sanctuary and Conservation Centre

5° 41.2′ S · 53° 40.3′ E · approximate

Island Conservation Society's centre in the Creole village, opened in 2009, with a tortoise sanctuary for young Aldabra giant tortoises and a native-tree trail; older tortoises roam free.

Practical

Nearly 2,000 pairs of wedge-tailed shearwaters breed on Desroches, and green turtles and hawksbills nest along the south and north-east coasts. The ICS team leads nature walks and, the society says, often drops into the hotel bar in the evening. Coordinate is approximate: north-coast village area.
