Desroches Island Anchorage (Northwest of Settlement)

5° 40.6′ S · 53° 39.8′ E · approximate

The main Amirantes anchorage: off the north coast of Desroches, the largest Amirantes island and the one closest to Mahé (about 124 nm), lying on the rim of a submerged atoll.

Practical

Pub. 171 (2010): anchor in 22-24 m about 0.7 nm NW of the settlement; in the SE trades this is an excellent anchorage with only a slight swell. The island is fringed by a drying reef that runs 1 nm off the NE extremity and 0.5 nm off the SW extremity. A white cross stands on the N side about 2 nm WSW of the (now unlit) lighthouse. The lagoon, about 25 m deep, is entered through a 1 mile-wide channel with a least depth of 18.3 m about 7 nm NW of the island (see the Desroches Lagoon Channel passage). Landing needs IDC and resort permission. Coordinate is approximate: 0.7 nm NW of the north-coast village area (OpenStreetMap outline).
