Alphonse Island Anchorage (West Side, Off the Reef)
7° 0.4′ S · 52° 42.9′ E · approximate
Alphonse is a single-island atoll about 217 nm SW of Victoria with a lagoon of 540 ha, home to Alphonse Island Lodge and the fly-fishing and diving operations of Blue Safari.
Practical
No yacht anchorage is described in the 2010 US sailing directions or by IDC; the only lagoon entry is one narrow SW channel 4-10 m deep, which IDC says gives safe passage to small boats, and the lagoon is at most about 10 m deep. Visiting yachts should arrange a pilot or a resort boat through IDC and the lodge and expect to lie off the reef edge in deep water in settled weather. Tidal streams in Canal de la Mort, to the south, reach 0.5-2.5 knots even at neaps with a heavy tide rip at the turn. Landing requires IDC permission. Coordinate is approximate: plotted about 0.4 nm off the west side of the island outline in OpenStreetMap, as a standby position, not a surveyed anchorage.
