Obstruction Pass State Park (Orcas Island)

48° 36.0′ N · 122° 49.7′ W · approximate

A small, wooded park on the south-east tip of Orcas looking over Obstruction Pass, with three buoys, a gravel beach and primitive camp sites. It is a handy stop before or after a run through the passes to Rosario Strait.

Practical

Position is approximate, off the beach at the south end of the park where the three buoys lie. Strong currents run through Obstruction Pass: the Coast Pilot estimates 5.5-6.5 knots at times with heavy rips east of Obstruction Island. Watch for private moorings and pilings along the north shore of the pass. No water; two composting toilets; nine primitive camp sites plus one for kayaks; 1.8 miles of trail. State Parks moorage (2025 rates, still posted in 2026): buoys $23 a night, docks $1 per foot ($23 minimum), charged from 1 pm to 8 am all year. Self-register and pay on arrival, rafted boats included; phone registration is posted at the buoys. An annual State Parks moorage permit ($7 per foot, $80 minimum) covers docks and buoys.
