Hunter Bay (Lopez Island)

48° 27.7′ N · 122° 51.2′ W

A broad, shallow bay at the south end of Lopez Sound, ringed by farms and woods. It is a local favourite for crabbing and a quiet night in most summer weather.

Practical

Coordinate is the OSM bay. Boaters report good holding in shallow water with room to swing, protection from most directions except east and north-east, and some funnelling in strong westerlies (2023 forum reports); the most sheltered spot is along the western shore. Check depth for a minus tide. Hunter Bay and Mud Bay are voluntary no-anchor zones for eelgrass on the Northwest Straits Commission map: anchor outside the eelgrass. Lopez Sound depths are mostly 3-5 fathoms (18-30 ft, 5-9 m) with a mud bottom (Coast Pilot). No facilities.
