Sabang Anchorage (St Paul's Bay)

10° 11.9′ N · 118° 53.7′ E

A north-facing bay under the forested St Paul range, off the beach village of Sabang: the staging anchorage for the UNESCO Underground River, with banca boats shuttling tourists to the cave mouth a few kilometres west.

Practical

Anchor in 5-10 m (Southeast Asia Pilot) off Sheridan/Sabang village. Open to the north: in northerly winds (the northeast monsoon) the swell can make it uncomfortable, so treat it as a fair-weather or southwest-season stop and leave if swell builds. Land the dinghy on the beach beside the busy Sabang pier, keeping clear of the tour bancas. Water by jerry can from the beach-front waterfall west of the pier. Several resorts, small shops and restaurants ashore (many cook to order, so order hours ahead; prices higher than Puerto Princesa). Road to Puerto Princesa about 2 hours. The bay borders the national park: respect protected-area rules and keep clear of the cave mouth and the banca lanes.

Best for

Overnight base for the Underground River in settled weather

Season

Best in the southwest monsoon and calm transition months; uncomfortable in northerly swell
