Port Barton Anchorage

10° 25.0′ N · 119° 10.4′ E

A large, peaceful bay on Palawan's west coast sheltered by a scatter of off-lying islands, off a laid-back beach village where visiting yachts are warmly welcomed and island hopping, reef snorkelling and jungle waterfalls are all within dinghy or kayak range.

Practical

Anchor off the village in 3-4 m on sand about 150 m off the beach (Southeast Asia Pilot); Noonsite's 2018 position is 10 24.98 N, 119 10.37 E. Gently shelving sand, good holding. In the northeast monsoon swell works into the bay, mainly on the south side: then anchor at the north end of the beach. Leave the dinghy anywhere on the beach; the traditional landing mark is the big propeller hanging outside the Jambalaya Cafe, with a water hose on the beach beside it. Approach: fish farms sit at the bay mouth and charting of the bay is poor; a course of 138 deg in and 318 deg out clears the reefs (SEAP), or follow SY Free Bird's three waypoints (see the Port Barton Reef Approach passage). Not a port of entry: clear at Puerto Princesa.

Best for

The best-serviced village anchorage on the west coast between Sabang and El Nido

Season

All year; anchor at the north end in northeast-monsoon swell (roughly Nov-Mar)
