Corregidor South Dock Anchorage

14° 22.9′ N · 120° 35.4′ E · approximate

The south-side alternative to North Dock, anchoring off Corregidor's South Dock below Bottomside and Malinta Hill. Use it when the NE monsoon makes the North Channel side lumpy, then land for the tunnels, batteries and the sunset at Battery Grubbs.

Practical

Position approximate: about 300 m south of the end of the Corregidor South Dock pier (OSM pier 14.3833-14.3846N 120.5891E), in open water between Corregidor and Caballo Island (about 1.7 km south, Wikipedia). Depth and holding are not documented in the sources found; sound carefully, as the bottom falls away into the South Channel. Corregidor and Caballo split the bay mouth into the North Channel (about 3.2 km wide) and the South Channel (about 10.5 km wide) (Wikipedia, Manila Bay). Protection: Bottomside gives a lee from northerly and north-easterly winds (amihan), but this side is open to the south and south-west, so move to North Dock when the habagat sets in. The Kilometre 0 marker and island facilities board stand at the head of South Dock (OSM). Check with the Coast Guard post at Bottomside before going ashore; island tours and entry are run by Sun Cruises, so arrange your visit in advance. The PGYC West Luzon notes suggest Mariveles as a base for a Corregidor day tour.
