Balayong Festival and Puerto Princesa Founding Anniversary (March 4)

9° 44.4′ N · 118° 43.8′ E · approximate

Every March 4 Puerto Princesa celebrates its founding in 1872, when Spanish colonisers chose the plateau above the bay for a settlement, with the Balayong Festival named after the pink-blossomed Palawan cherry tree.

Practical

Position approximate: the cathedral hill near Plaza Cuartel, where the City Tourism Office says the first mass was held (the site of today's park); events run across the city. Ordinance No. 288 (2005) declared March 4 the Balayong Festival in celebration of the city's founding anniversary, and Republic Act 7684 (1994) made March 4 a special non-working holiday in the city, so expect government offices (including clearance offices) to be closed. The Balayong (Palawan cherry) blooms in February and March. Followed in early April by Pangalipay sa Baybay on the Baywalk.

Best for

A festive city holiday; plan clearance around the closed offices
