Yucatán Current

21° 18.0′ N · 86° 36.0′ W · approximate

The powerful northbound current that squeezes through the Yucatán Channel between Mexico and Cuba to become the Loop Current and, eventually, the Gulf Stream - it dominates every passage plan on this coast.

Practical

Coordinate is a representative point in the current east of Isla Mujeres. The channel carries roughly 17-27 sverdrups; Loop Current peak speeds reach 1.5-1.8 m/s (about 3-3.5 kn), strongest on the western (Mexican) side, with a weaker southbound Cuban countercurrent on the eastern side and an undercurrent beneath. Practical effects: southbound runs (Isla Mujeres to Cozumel and Belize) go against it and northbound boats get a boost; Cruising World describes rough seas and heavy shipping in the Yucatán Channel, and noforeignland stresses the current's effect on all coastal and offshore passages. Allow for a large set across your track when crossing to Cuba and avoid crossing with a strong northerly against the stream.
