Westies (Bahía de los Ángeles)

28° 57.0′ N · 113° 33.0′ W · approximate

Hot, dry westerlies that drop off the Sierra de San Borja and can go from zero to over 50 knots in minutes — the signature hazard of the Bahía de los Ángeles anchorages.

Practical

Coordinate is the village (Wikipedia). Choose anchorages with west protection when westerlies are forecast (village waterfront north of the launch ramp, Isla La Ventana except its narrow west gap). Nightly westerlies are also routine at Alcatraz and Punta Trinidad, often 25+ kn. Anchor with ample scope and keep the dinghy lifted at night. The Log calls these early-summer NW gales 'elefantes': they arrive suddenly off the mountain gaps, and the only warning is a horizontal cloud in the gap — which you can't see at night. Wikivoyage describes hot dry westerlies of 46°C (115°F) with 130 km/h (80 mph) gusts and 1% humidity at 3 am.
