Bahía de los Ángeles Biosphere Reserve
28° 56.9′ N · 113° 33.6′ W
Since 2007 the Bahía de los Ángeles, Canales de Ballenas y Salsipuedes Biosphere Reserve has protected 387,956 ha of coast, 16 islands and both channels — whale sharks, fin whales, sea lions and five sea turtle species.
Practical
Coordinate is the CONANP (protected areas commission) office in the village, mapped in OpenStreetMap — the place to ask about current rules and the 'Pasaporte por la Conservación' visitor pass, which CONANP requires for crew on whale shark trips. Going ashore on Gulf islands generally requires a CONANP permit. Part of the UNESCO 'Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California' World Heritage Site.
Best for
Understanding the rules before exploring the islands
