Sea Turtle Nesting Season (Banderas Bay)
20° 35.9′ N · 105° 14.4′ W · approximate
Olive ridley turtles nest on the bay's beaches from late June to mid-December; volunteers relocate the eggs to protected corrals and release the hatchlings about 45 days later.
Practical
Coordinate is Playa Los Muertos (approx; nesting occurs bay-wide). Sea turtles nest on Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay beaches from late June through mid-December (Banderas News, 2026; Wikivoyage gives May to October). The municipal nesting corral is at Holi Beach; in September 2026 it held 574 nests (more than 55,000 eggs), barricaded against Hurricane Polo's surf, and public releases began late that month. The Navy rescued 108 hatchlings emerging on Playa Los Muertos in August 2026. Watch for turtles at the surface when motoring; join a supervised release rather than handling hatchlings.
