Isla San Pedro Nolasco Dive
27° 58.0′ N · 111° 22.7′ W
A rugged 4-km island 28 km off San Carlos — 'Seal Island' — where clear water (often 100+ ft visibility, sometimes 200 ft) and a large California sea lion colony make it the best dive and snorkel trip from the Sonora coast.
Practical
Named sites include Magdalena Bay, Lighthouse, The Little Waterfall, The Cave, La Lobera, North Point, The Window, Pelican Point, The Cavern, The Rookery and South Point. Nature reserve: going ashore requires a CONANP permit; sport fishing and diving are well established. San Carlos dive shops (e.g. Gary's Dive Shop, which usually runs Nolasco on Saturdays) offer trips. Water temperature at San Carlos runs about 63-71°F in winter (Nov–Mar) and 85-90°F+ in Jun–Aug. Exposed island — go in settled weather.
