Isla Blanca Anchorage (Chacmuchuch Lagoon)

21° 24.2′ N · 86° 50.1′ W · approximate

An escape from the Isla Mujeres harbor crowd: tucked inside the northern mouth of the Chacmuchuch lagoon, in the lee of the long, empty white-sand Isla Blanca peninsula, about 12 nm north of the harbor. Kiters, flamingos and almost no development.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate, and so far it is not a published cruiser waypoint. It is plotted about 1 km west of the peninsula's inner shore, just inside the lagoon's northern opening, using the OpenStreetMap outline of Laguna Chacmochuch (relation 17644578). That outline shows the lagoon open to the sea to the north between the peninsula (about 21.410, -86.825) and the mainland (about 21.404, -86.888). Wikipedia: the peninsula is about 20 km long and 500-850 m wide, with the lagoon to the west and the Caribbean to the east and north. The northernmost Mesoamerican reef lies about 1.5 km off its east coast, so come around the north end, not across the reef. No published depths, holding or tide data were found. Kite schools describe much of the lagoon as barely knee-deep (Por Esto, May 2026). Feel in on the sounder in good light, anchor where your draft allows and expect thin water close to the beach. The lee of the peninsula should give shelter from the trade-wind E and SE, but the open northern mouth leaves it exposed in nortes; this has not been confirmed by a cruising source. The lagoon is a Quintana Roo state reserve (Refugio Estatal de Flora y Fauna Sistema Lagunar Chacmochuch, per OpenStreetMap), so no anchoring on seagrass beds or mangroves, no discharge and no fishing. Kitesurfers are busy here Feb-Jun, so keep clear of the kite zones near Playa Acapulquito. There are no services: carry everything from Isla Mujeres, which is also the nearest port of entry.
