Devil's Throat at Punta Sur (Cozumel)
20° 16.5′ N · 87° 0.5′ W · approximate
La Garganta del Diablo - a deep cavern system in the Punta Sur reef where divers drop through a 45-degree tunnel of red-encrusted coral from about 100 to 125 ft.
Practical
Coordinate is approximate: moved offshore of the island's southern tip (Wikipedia's Punta Sur reference point, 20.28, -86.99, falls on land) to the wall off the south-west end of the island, where operators describe Punta Sur reef; the exact site position is not published - your dive operator will put you on it. Starts at about 80 ft and exits near 135 ft - beyond typical recreational limits, so an advanced dive needing a light; keep moving to avoid decompression obligation and beware nitrogen narcosis on air. The 'Cathedral' chamber lost its famous cross-shaped sponge to Hurricane Wilma (2005). Inside the national park; dive only with a licensed operator.
