21° 32.5′ N · 105° 16.7′ W
The hilltop Spanish fort of San Basilio (the Contaduría), with cannons, stone carvings of the Spanish kings and the ruined 1769 church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, whose bells inspired Longfellow's poem 'The Bells of San Blas'. It looks over the town, the estuary and the sea.
Practical
Open 8 am–5 pm daily (Wikivoyage). A short, steep walk or taxi from the plaza, with free parking. Bring insect repellent. From here Junípero Serra sailed for the Californias in 1768. On the way, see the restored 1768 Aduana (customs house), now a cultural center, on Calle Benito Juárez. Coordinate is from Wikivoyage.
