C-56 Juan Escutia Wreck (Puerto Morelos)

20° 51.6′ N · 86° 50.7′ W · approximate

A WWII minesweeper (ex-USS Knave, AM-256) scuttled off Puerto Morelos in 2000 as an artificial reef. She sits largely intact at 25-30 m with several entry points; stingrays, morays, barracuda, turtles and, in winter, eagle rays are regulars.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate and is NOT the wreck position: it is a representative point outside the Puerto Morelos barrier reef, where the wreck lies; get the position or a guide from a Puerto Morelos dive shop (Aquanauts, Wet Set, Om Delfín). Depth 25-30 m (80-100 ft) depending on source; PADI calls it best for advanced divers because of depth and strong currents, while Scuba Total says beginners can manage it when the current is mild. A DiveBuddy diver reported a very strong surface current on one dive. Outside the reef, open to the Yucatán Current - drift dive procedures apply.
