Bahía de Cuastecomates (Secret Anchorage)

19° 13.9′ N · 104° 44.0′ W · approximate

The 'Secret Anchorage': a tiny cove just around the point northwest of Melaque, hard to see from offshore, with a palm-shaded village of dirt streets, beach palapa bars and a small resort with upscale waterfront dining. Its reef is a known snorkel spot when the swell lets you reach it.

Practical

Position approximate: placed in the cove west of Cuastecomates village using the OpenStreetMap coastline; the Pacific Mexico guide (Breeding and Bansmer) publishes a waypoint, which you should use. Small: room for five or six boats. Poorly protected from Pacific swell — cruisers report a brutal swell that kept them from the reef and beach, splash landings through surf, and afternoon wind building into squalls. Pick a calm spell and arrive early. The entrance is hard to make out from the open ocean. The Mexican Navy has boarded and inspected boats anchored here (papers, passports, crew list); cooperate and call the Navy on VHF 16 if you need help. Red tide has closed swimming on some visits. Walkable over the hill to Melaque.
