Molokai Hoe and Na Wahine O Ke Kai Canoe Races

21° 5.3′ N · 157° 15.5′ W

The world championships of long-distance outrigger canoe racing: crews launch from Hale o Lono and race about 41 miles across the Kaiwi Channel to Waikiki, the women in Na Wahine O Ke Kai in late September and the men in the Molokai Hoe in October.

Practical

2026 dates: Na Wahine O Ke Kai on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 (organizer OHCRA site) and the Molokai Hoe on Sunday, October 11, 2026 (molokaihoe.com). Wikipedia: canoes launch from Hale o Lono Harbor and finish at Fort DeRussy beach, Waikiki. The first Molokai Hoe, in 1952, started at Kawakiu Bay. Expect Lono Harbor and the channel to be packed with escort boats on race days: anchor elsewhere or arrive well before, and keep clear of the course.
