Ilio Point and Laau Point
21° 6.1′ N · 157° 18.6′ W
Molokai's two western corners: Laau Point, the low rocky southwest extremity with its light, and Ilio Point, the northwest tip, with the bare, rolling west coast between them.
Practical
Coast Pilot 10: Laau Point Light 21°05'59"N, 157°18'18"W, 151 ft above the water; the 10-fathom curve is about 0.5 mile offshore; currents are strong and erratic: the west-setting current along the south coast turns sharply north at the point, a strong tide rip west and north of the point breaks when the wind is north, and vessels should guard against a set onto the point. Penguin Bank extends 28 miles west-southwest from Laau Point (21 to 30 fathoms, dropping abruptly to 100+ fathoms at the edges). Ilio Point (GNIS 21.2193, -157.2594) is 8 miles north; breakers have been seen 0.3 mile off in heavy weather; in trades, small craft can find fair anchorage 1.5 miles south of the point.
