Manana (Rabbit Island) Seabird Sanctuary
21° 19.7′ N · 157° 39.4′ W
A 361-ft twin-vent tuff cone a mile north-north-west of Makapuu Point, home to more than 10,000 wedge-tailed shearwaters, tens of thousands of sooty terns and brown noddies, and visiting Hawaiian monk seals; neighboring Kaohikaipu (Black Rock) is also a sanctuary.
Practical
Landing is illegal without DLNR permission; enjoy it from the water. Coast Pilot: deep water on the seaward side; 4 fathoms between Manana and the mainland and 5 fathoms between Manana and Kaohikaipu, but both passages are not recommended for strangers because reefs make off from both islands; a double rock lies 200 yards north-east and a barely-awash rock 200 yards south-west of Kaohikaipu. Give the islets a wide berth when rounding Makapuu.
