Koko Crater Railway Trail
21° 17.0′ N · 157° 41.3′ W · approximate
A brutally steep climb straight up the old WWII military tramway on Koko Crater, ending at bunkers on the rim with views over Hanauma Bay and Hawaii Kai.
Practical
Approx position from the OpenStreetMap trail line (Koko Crater Tramway). The trail follows the abandoned railroad the military built to summit bunkers in WWII; the city took over in 1966 (Koko Head Regional Park) and the nonprofit Kokonut Koalition maintains it (Wikipedia). Summit about 1,208 ft (Wikipedia; Coast Pilot gives 1,204 ft). No shade: go early with plenty of water. Trailhead parking at Koko Head District Park.
Best for
A sunrise leg-burner with a crater-rim view
