Mala Wharf Dive (Collapsed Pier)

20° 53.1′ N · 156° 41.3′ W · approximate

The 1922 Mala pier, its broken concrete pilings and slabs lying on the sand off Puunoa Point, now a reef of its own and a well-known shore snorkel and dive.

Practical

Coordinate is approx: offset seaward from the OSM 'Mala Historic Wharf' node along the old pier line. Wikipedia lists the 1922 pier as a popular snorkeling spot; the Coast Pilot calls the concrete wharf in poor condition and no longer used. Enter from beside the Mala ramp breakwater and watch for trailer-boat traffic; fly a dive flag and keep clear of the ramp channel. Current near the wharf is reported to set south most of the time (Coast Pilot). Visibility drops after rain and south swell. Depth and condition details were not verified; go with a local dive operator for a first visit.

Best for
