Laniakea Beach Green Sea Turtles
21° 36.6′ N · 158° 5.7′ W
Turtle Beach: Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) haul out to bask on the sand and graze the limu on the rocks here, watched over by volunteers.
Practical
NOAA: basking documented since 1999, 35 individuals recorded with 18-20 regulars, but on a typical day zero to four turtles bask. Stay at least 10 ft away on land and in the water, behind the volunteers' red rope; never touch or feed. Malama na Honu volunteers are on the beach 10 am to sunset daily. Report injured turtles to the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline 888-256-9840. Parking is limited across Kamehameha Highway with no traffic light: cross carefully; traffic backs up on weekends and sunny afternoons. No lifeguards or facilities; a strong rip forms in the western channel when surf is up. Visit by road from Haleiwa (about 2 miles).
