Lahaina Pali Trail

20° 47.5′ N · 156° 33.8′ W

The old King's Highway footpath zigzagging over the dry south flank of the West Maui Mountains between Ukumehame and Maalaea, with huge views over Maalaea Bay, Kahoolawe, Lanai and whale-filled water in winter.

Practical

Coordinate is the Ukumehame (west) trailhead from the OpenStreetMap trail trace; the Maalaea (east) end is at about 20.8076, -156.5128 near the wind turbines above Maalaea. The OSM trace measures about 4.5 miles one way in plan, so expect roughly 5 miles with the switchbacks. Hot, exposed and dry: carry plenty of water and start early. A one-way walk needs a car shuttle. Length, elevation and current trail status were not verified from the state Na Ala Hele site.

Best for

Shore-leave hike from Maalaea with whale views

Season

Best early morning; whales Nov–Apr
