Kolekole Beach Park
19° 52.8′ N · 155° 6.9′ W
A small black-sand and boulder beach at the mouth of Kolekole Stream - the stream that falls over Akaka Falls - under a 100-foot highway bridge.
Practical
Coordinate from to-hawaii's map. Strong currents at the stream mouth; high surf washes over the beach. The 1946 tsunami hit here with waves about 37 ft above sea level and ended the Hawaii Consolidated Railway. Picnicking and fishing, not swimming.
Best for
Picnic stop on the Hamakua drive
