Keauhou Bay Small Boat Harbor

19° 33.7′ N · 155° 57.8′ W

A tiny, well-protected bay between two lava flows, birthplace of Kamehameha III in 1814 and home port of the Fair Wind and other Kealakekua and manta-ray tour boats. It is one of the best-protected spots on the Kona coast for shallow-draft boats, but the entrance is strewn with coral heads.

Practical

Coordinate is the Keauhou Small Boat Harbor point in the state harbor GIS layer (Kaleiopapa Street). DOBOR lists Keauhou Boat Harbor under the Honokohau office, (808) 327-3685. Coast Pilot (October 2026): the bay indents 0.3 mile and is 300 yards wide; Keauhou Bay Entrance Directional Light (19-33.72N 155-57.73W) is on a post at the head of the bay; the bottom is extremely irregular with many coral heads with 5-6 ft over them, a reef extends 100 yards off the north entrance point, and breakers frequently extend across the mouth; boats of 4-ft draft can enter with a lookout. Launching ramps at the head of the bay and on the southeast side; a passenger pier for excursion boats at the southeast end; several mooring buoys in the bay; fuel only in limited quantities by truck, no fuel dock. Park with restrooms, showers and picnic tables beside the ramp. Busy at tour check-in times. Keauhou Bay is a Fisheries Management Area with a thrownetting zone (HAR 13-57). Keel boats should treat this as a dinghy or tender destination and anchor elsewhere.
