Keahole Point

19° 43.7′ N · 156° 3.7′ W

The western tip of the Big Island beside Kona International Airport, a low black-lava point where the north-setting current meets the trades and kicks up rips; deep ocean water pumped ashore here feeds the NELHA research park.

Practical

Coordinate is Keahole Point Light as given in the Coast Pilot (19-43.67N 156-03.67W, 43 ft, post with black and white diamond dayboard). Coast Pilot (October 2026): a berth of 0.5 mile clears the point in deep water; small tide rips are frequent near the point and 2 miles north the rips are violent when the northeast trades are strong. Do not anchor within 1 mile offshore, or within 500 yards north and 1,000 yards south of the point, because of submerged pipelines. The airport control-tower aerobeacon is more prominent at night than the light. A cluster of Malama Kai day-use dive moorings (Garden Eels, Keahole Sand Chute, Wash Rock, Pipe Dreams) lies just north and east of the point.
