Kanaha Beach Park Kitesurf

20° 54.0′ N · 156° 26.3′ W · approximate

The windsurf and kiteboard capital of central Maui: a long beach park behind the airport where steady side-shore trades blow across flat water inside the reef, with Kite Beach just downwind.

Practical

Approx: park centroid from OpenStreetMap (relation 6750000). HAR 13-256-130: three swim-only zones (A, B, C, marked by buoys) where no vessel or sailboard may operate; sailboards may not launch from Kanaha Beach Park before 11:00 am, except beginner windsurfing and instruction after 9:00 am within 300 ft of shore between Zones A and B. Kiting is done mainly at Kite Beach downwind of the windsurf launch; an FAA waiver for Kahului Airport limits kite operations (no kiting in a corridor about 2 miles by 1 mile off the runway end toward Spreckelsville, daylight only, no maneuvers over uninvolved people; lower height limits were added in 2003). Check the Maui Kiteboarding Association rules and current waiver. Best wind May to October, typically filling in around 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Park open about 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Rentals and lessons from shops in Kahului and Paia.
