Kahului Harbor Small-Craft Anchorage

20° 53.9′ N · 156° 28.4′ W · approximate

The unimproved water inside Kahului's breakwaters, where small craft have room to anchor out of the trade-wind sea on Maui's north shore.

Practical

Coordinate is approx: inside the breakwaters toward the west side, derived from the Coast Pilot description and OSM breakwater positions. Coast Pilot: 'Small craft have plenty of anchorage room in the unimproved areas behind the breakwaters'; the west part of the inner harbor is shallow, and a silt and debris (old tires) shoal lies in the southeast corner of the commercial harbor at about 20 53'44"N, 156 27'56"W. A channel marked by private buoys leads to the boat ramp at the west end. Keep clear of ship and barge traffic and confirm with the harbormaster (808) 873-3350. Harbor currents are weak. Approach (Coast Pilot 10): on the 176.8° lighted range between the breakwaters; Pauwela Point Light 9 miles ENE is the principal approach mark; entrance channel and basin 35 ft. Avoid Waihee Reef (0.7 mile off, NW of the breakwaters) and Spartan Reef (1.2 miles off, NE). Sea-Seek harbor waypoint 20°53.84'N 156°28.31'W. Cruise-ship security zones (33 CFR 165) apply. Fuel, diesel and water are trucked to the piers. Noonsite (2024) notes Hawaii now charges anchoring fees in harbors; verify locally.
