Kaalualu Bay Anchorage
18° 58.2′ N · 155° 36.8′ W · approximate
The best small-craft shelter near South Point in normal trades - a bay one mile west of Kamilo Point with grassy plains and bare lava ashore.
Practical
Coordinate approximate (estimated from the Coast Pilot's description: anchorage 200 yards due west of the point on the east side of the entrance; plot on a chart before use). Coast Pilot: good shelter for small craft during northeast trades but exposed in kona weather; anchor in about 10 fathoms. Avoid the submerged coral reefs between the anchorage and the northeast part of the bay, especially in heavy swell. Remote - no services.
Best for
Waiting out the trades before rounding Ka Lae
Season
Northeast trades; leave in kona (southerly) weather
