Ormos Polis (Polis Bay)

38° 26.4′ N · 20° 38.5′ E

A deep west-facing bay below Stavros with a small fishing harbour, clear turquoise water over a pebble beach, and the Loizos Cave on its north side — an ancient cult cave whose finds (including bronze tripods) are in the Stavros museum.

Practical

Coordinate is the Sea-Seek 'Port Polis (Ithaki)' position (38°26.39'N 20°38.47'E); Sea-Seek says anchor in 10–20 m, sheltered from N and generally from S winds but open to the south; a small café opens in the afternoon when the fishermen return. Check against your chart. The fishing harbour is full of local boats. Best anchoring is directly north of the cave, with a line ashore. A submerged rock about 10 m from the cave has about 1.3 m over it. Holding is bad in thick weed — make sure the anchor digs through. Mind fixed moorings and a submarine cable south of the port. Room is easier outside peak season. Small canteen ashore; a Stavros restaurant ('Delicious') delivers to the port or will taxi you up to the village. Faces west toward Kefalonia across the Ithaca channel.
