Cape Sounion Anchorage (Sounion Bay NW)

37° 39.4′ N · 24° 1.0′ E

The classic anchorage under the Temple of Poseidon — swing to your anchor in Sounion bay and watch the columns turn gold at sunset, as sailors waiting for the meltemi to ease have done since antiquity.

Practical

Sand and weed, at times poor holding — set well and consider a line ashore. Gusts come down from the north. Used to wait out meltemi before crossing to Kea, Kythnos or Andros, and as a first or last night from Alimos (24 nm). Tavernas ashore; the 20-minute walk to taverna 'Syrtaki' is recommended. Lavrio-based charterers are advised to leave Lavrio early and anchor here instead. In strong southerlies go to Korissia or Vourkari on Kea (24 nm) or tuck behind Archi islet (see separate entry).

Best for

First night out of Athens, temple sunset from the cockpit

Season

May–Oct; northerly gusts in meltemi, open to the south
