Psara & Antipsara Seabird and Falcon Colonies

38° 33.0′ N · 25° 32.4′ E · approximate

Psara, Antipsara and their islets are an Important Bird Area for Eleonora's falcon, Scopoli's and Yelkouan shearwaters and European shags.

Practical

Antipsara is a nesting site for European shag, Eleonora's falcon, Cory's/Scopoli's shearwater and Yelkouan shearwater (Wikipedia). BirdLife lists the site 'Psara and Antipsara islands and surrounding islets' as an IBA. Falcons hunt along the cliffs late summer–autumn; shearwaters raft offshore at dusk. Keep dinghies away from nesting cliffs and avoid landing on islets. Position approximate: mid-channel between Psara and Antipsara. Phototravellers adds that Antipsara is a bird-protection area where European shags and Eleonora's falcons breed and the falcons are often seen hunting over the sea, and that sea turtles are sometimes seen off Antipsara's rocks. KBA 1151 (147 km², enlarged seaward in 2012) is listed for breeding seabirds and breeding and passage raptors; threats are illegal hunting, overfishing, disturbance and introduced cats and rats.
