Pera Kastro / Chora (Kalymnos)

36° 58.0′ N · 26° 57.7′ E

The walled medieval capital of Kalymnos, on a crag about 255 m up above Chora. It held some 1,200–1,500 people behind Knights-era walls, and nine little churches and old cisterns survive among the ruined houses.

Practical

Take a bus or taxi from Pothia to Chora (a few km inland), then climb the steep path and steps to the castle. Bring water and a hat, and go early or late in summer. Fortified by the Knights of St John from the 1430s and reinforced after the 1492/3 earthquake. Views over the Pothia valley, the port and Kos. Coordinate from the municipal site's map pin.
