Meltemi in the Chios Channel

38° 27.0′ N · 26° 12.0′ E · approximate

From late spring to early autumn the northerly meltemi funnels down the channel between Chios and Turkey against a north-going current, raising a short, steep, sometimes dangerous sea.

Practical

CruisersWiki: in a strong meltemi the seas in the channel, with its north-going current, can build to dangerous levels. Noonsite: often an uncomfortable lumpy swell in the harbour approaches due to northerlies against the north-flowing current. Typical pattern: builds through the day, peaks in the afternoon, eases overnight — move early. Meltemi refuges: Trachilia/Salagona/Kato Fana on the south coast, Emporios, Lithi, Oinousses Mandraki. Coast Guard VHF 12; Olympia Radio VHF 85, 25 or 28 for forecasts (CruisersWiki).
