Lakki Italian rationalist architecture
37° 7.9′ N · 26° 51.1′ E
Built in the 1930s as Portolago, Mussolini's showpiece naval town, Lakki is one of the best ensembles of Italian Rationalist architecture anywhere, with wide boulevards, a circular market and a cinema. It looks like a De Chirico painting set on a Greek bay.
Practical
A walk of an hour or two from either marina. Some buildings are restored and others still crumbling; the church of Agios Ioannis Theologos is also in Lakki. Renamed Lakki after the islands passed to Greece.
Best for
Architecture walk from the marina
